Greīfenbergeris, Juozas Iurgevich 

(also. Iosif Georgievich Greifenberger). Born Mar. 25 (Apr. 6). 1898. in Kalvarijoja, in present-day Kapsukas Raion, Lithuanian SSR; died Dec. 27. 1926. Figure in the Communist Party of Lithuania; one of the organizers of the communist youth movement; publicist. Born into the family of a blacksmith; a worker.

Greifenbergeris graduated from a Gymnasium in Smolensk. He was a delegate to the First Congress of the Russian Communist Youth League (RKSM) in 1918. He became a member of the committee of the RKSM of the Western Oblast in December 1918 and then a member of the Central Committee of the KSM of Byelorussia. In February 1920 he became a member of the Executive Committee of the Communist Youth International. In the spring of 1920, Greifenbergeris began underground work in bourgeois Lithuania. During 1920–22 he was secretary of the Central Committee (CC) of the KSM of Lithuania and editor of the newspaper Molodoi kommunist. He was a delegate to the Third (1921) and Fourth (1924) Congresses of the Communist Party of Lithuania. In 1921 he became a member of the CC. in 1923 a member of the Organizational Bureau of the CC, and in 1926 a member of the Politburo of the CC of the Communist Party of Lithuania. In 1921 he was a delegate to the Third Congress of the Comintern and the Second Congress of the Communist Youth International. Greifenbergeris was arrested and shot during the fascist coup in Lithuania (December 1926).
