Juruena 

a river in central Brazil, a left tributary of the Tapajós River, which is a right tributary of the Amazon. Length, about 1,000 km. The Juruena rises in the Sierra dos Parecis and flows through the sparsely settled Brazilian Plateau to the north, forming rapids and waterfalls. The Juruena is fed by rainwater, with high water from March to April and low water from August to October.

Other linguists proposed different centres of origin: Loukotka (1929: map; 1935; 1950), between the Juruena and the Arinos rivers; Childe (1940), the sources of the Xingu and the Upper Araguaia; Migliazza (1982), between the Ji-Parana and the Aripuana, tributaries of the Madeira; Urban (1992), for the Tupian stock between the Madeira and the Xingu, closer to the sources than to the valleys, for the Tupi-Guarani family between the Madeira and the Xingu.
