Jutland Uprising of 1441–43
one of the largest rebellions waged by Danish peasants during the Middle Ages. The principal cause of the uprising was the progressive enserfment of the peasants, whose position had especially worsened under the burden of Denmark’s prolonged wars. Incited by the deposition of King Eric of Pomerania and the seizure of power by feudal magnates, the uprising had its center in north Jutland, where many peasants still retained personal freedom. The peasant army was routed near Ergensbørg. The quelling of the uprising resulted in further deterioration of the peasants’ position. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
