Jyväskylä (yü`văskü'lă), city (1998 pop. 76,948), Western Finland prov., S central Finland. Situated on Lake Päijänne, it is an important port. Paper and wood products, metals, wool, and foodstuffs are produced. There is an arts festival held in July. The city was chartered in 1837 and was the site (1858) of the first Finnish-language secondary school. A university, designed by architect Alvar Aalto Aalto, Alvar , 1898–1976, Finnish architect and furniture designer. Aalto is considered one of the foremost architects of the 20th cent. Jyväskylä 

a city in Finland, on Lake Jyvä (Jyväsjärvi). Capital of the lääni (province) of Keski-Suomi. Population, 62,000 (1976). Jyväskylä is a transportation junction and port. An important role in the city’s economy is played by the machine-building industry, which produces tractors, electric meters, and sewing machines. Jyväskylä also has chemical, pulp and paper, wood-products and food-processing industries.
