(yü`văskü'lă), city (1998 pop. 76,948), Western Finland prov., S central Finland. Situated on Lake Päijänne, it is an important port. Paper and wood products, metals, wool, and foodstuffs are produced. There is an arts festival held in July. a city in Finland, on Lake Jyvä (Jyväsjärvi). Capital of the lääni (province) of Keski-Suomi. Population, 62,000 (1976). Jyväskylä is a transportation junction and port. An important role in the city’s economy is played by the machine-building industry, which produces tractors, electric meters, and sewing machines. Jyväskylä also has chemical, pulp and paper, wood-products and food-processing industries.
