Kadochnikov, Pavel Petrovich 

Born July 29, 1915, in Petrograd. Soviet Russian film actor. People’s Artist of the RSFSR (1965).

Kadochnikov graduated from the Leningrad Theatrical Institute in 1935 and worked until 1944 in the New Young People’s Theater of Leningrad. He made his film debut in 1935 as Mikhas’ in Coming of Age. He played the role of M. Gorky in the films lakov Sverdlov (where he also played Lenia Sukhov, 1940), A Teacher’s Epic (Pedagogical Poem, 1955), and Prologue (1956). Kadochnikov has also successfully appeared in lyrical comedies. These roles include Mukhin in Anton Ivanovich Is Angry (1941) and Rybal’chenko in Honeymoon (1956). His best roles were Major Fedotov in A Reconnaissance Scout’s Feat (1947), Aleksei Meres’ev in The Story of a Real Man (1948), and Vladimir Staritskii in S. M. Eisenstein’s film Ivan the Terrible (parts 1 and 2, 1945 and 1958). In this same film Kadochnikov also played Khaldei and the tsar’s confessor, Evstafii.

Kadochnikov’s directorial debut was the 1965 film The Musicians of a Regiment (together with G. S. Kazanskii), in which he also played the role of Chulkovskii. In 1970 he directed the film version of A. N. Ostrovskii’s play The Snow Maiden, in which he also played Tsar Berendei and for which he wrote the scenario. He received the State Prize of the USSR in 1948, 1949, and 1951 and has been awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and a medal.
