Kaigorodov, Dmitrii Nikiforovich
Born Aug 31 (Sept. 12), 1846, in Polotsk, present-day Vitebsk Oblast; died Feb. 11, 1924, in Leningrad. Russian natural scientist and natural-science propagandist. In 1871, Kaigorodov graduated from the St. Petersburg Agricultural Institute (now the Lumber Industry Academy in Leningrad), and in 1875 he became head of the department of lumber technology and engineering there. He became a professor in 1882. Materials collected by the phenological network he organized in the European part of the USSR provided the basis for a bioclimatic regionalization of this area. Kaigorodov compiled a series of phenological maps of the spring migration of birds. He was the author of popular science books, including Conversations About the Russian Forest (two series, 1880–81), From the Green Kingdom (1888), and From the Feathered Kingdom (1892).
