Security forces killed at least four Maoist party supporters and one member of the police died in a clash on December 4 in Kailali in western Nepal, where landless people had illegally occupied government-owned land.
The clashes erupted in Kailali district, 700 kilometers west of Kathmandu, after police burned some 500 huts of encroachers who had illegally settled in a forest by felling trees.
The strike came a day after hundreds of pro-Maoist demonstrators set fire to vehicles and vandalised shops in western Nepal, in response to the deaths of the illegal settlers in Kailali district on Friday.
