Kakabadze, Polikarp Malkhazovich

Born Feb 23 (Mar. 7), 1895, in the village of Kukhi, present-day Tsulu-kidze Raion; died Oct. 17, 1972, in Tbilisi. Soviet Georgian playwright.

Kakabadze’s works were first published in 1919. His play At the Crossroads was presented on the Georgian stage of Baku in 1918. He wrote the lyrical drama Three Maidens and the plays Before Dawn and Prisoners of Lisbon (produced in 1925). His most important comedies are Kvarkvare Tutaberi (produced in 1928), Marriage in the Kolkhoz (1937), and Kakhaber’s Sword (1956). The situations of his best comedies are genuine and lively, and the characters are aesthetically convincing. Kakabadze is a master of dialogue, bringing vitality to speech on stage. His historical dramas (such as Vakhtang I and Bagrat VII) occupy an important place in the Georgian theater.
