Kakharov, Abdulakhad 

Born Apr. 4 (17), 1913, in Kanibadam, in the present-day Tadzhik SSR. Soviet statesman and party figure. Became a member of the CPSU in 1939. The son of an artisan.

Kakharov graduated from Leninabad Pedagogical Institute in 1954 as an extension student. He was engaged in Komsomol, trade union, soviet, and party work in the Tadzhik SSR from 1933 to 1947. He was secretary of the Leninabad Oblast committee of the Communist Party of Tadzhikistan from 1947 to 1954 and was chairman of the executive committee of the Leninabad Oblast soviet of working people’s deputies in 1954–55. Kakharov served as deputy chairman of the Council of Ministers and chairman of the State Planning Commission of the Tadzhik SSR from 1956 to 1961. He was chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Tadzhik SSR from 1961 to 1973, simultaneously serving as the republic’s minister of foreign affairs. He was elected a candidate member of the Central Committee of th CPSU at the Twenty-second through Twenty-fourth Congresses of the party and was a deputy to the fifth through eighth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. Kakharov has been awarded two Orders of Lenin, five other orders, and medals.
