Kakhovskii, Petr Grigor’evich 

Born 1797; died July 13 (25), 1826. Aristocratic revolutionary Decembrist. One of the most active participants in the uprising of Dec. 14, 1825.

Kakhovskii was from the dvorianstvo (nobility or gentry) of Smolensk Province. He was a retired first lieutenant. In early 1825 he was accepted into the Northern Society of the Decembrists in St. Petersburg by K. F. Ryleev. Kakhovskii supported the introduction of the republican system into Russia. He insisted on the extermination of the entire tsarist family. On the day of the uprising, Kakhovskii brought out the Marine Guards and was one of the first to arrive on Senate Square, where he mortally wounded the governor-general of St. Petersbrug, M. A. Miloradovich, and the commander of the Grenadier Life Guards Regiment, Colonel N. K. Stiurler. After his arrest, Kakhovskii wrote several letters to Nicholas I and the investigators containing a critical analysis of conditions in Russia. Kakhovskii was executed in Peter and Paul Fortress together with P. I. Pestel’, S. I. Murav’ev-Apostol, M. P. Bestuzhev-Riumin, and Ryleev.
