Kakinada

Kakinada (kəkĭnä`də) or Cocanada (kōkənä`də), town (1991 pop. 327,541), Andhra Pradesh state, SE India, on the Godavari River delta. A coastal trading port on the Bay of Bengal, it is now a district administrative center and a market for sugarcane, peanuts, tobacco, cotton, and iron ore. There is a flour-milling factory and a salt-processing plant.

In India, the first CHIKV outbreak was recorded in 1963 in Calcutta and was followed by epidemics in Chennai, Pondicherry, and Vellore in 1964; Visakhapatnam, Rajmundry, and Kakinada in 1965; Nagpur in 1965; and Barsi in 1973 (1).
Missionary wives were active in Kakinada even before these female missionary societies were formed.
Coast guard ships spotted the bodies of 50 fishermen Saturday off the coast near Kakinada, relief official Phanandra Reddy said.
