Kaktynš, Adolf

Born July 14 (26), 1885, in Jaunjelgava; died July 25, 1965, in California. Latvian singer (baritone).

Kaktynš was among the leading Latvian operatic artists between 1913 and 1944. He performed as a dramatic actor in the early 1900’s in Riga theaters. After 1910 he sang in concerts, and after 1912, in operas. Kaktynš toured to Monte Carlo, Paris, Munich, and Petrograd. He combined an outstanding gift for drama with stage presence and a voice of rare beauty and strength. Among his parts were Lāčplēsis in Jānis Medinš’ Fire and Night and the title roles in Verdi’s Rigoletto, Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov, and A. Rubinstein’s Demon.
