Kalaupapa PeninsulaPeninsula on the northern shore of Molokai island, Hawaii, U.S. Occupying a 5-sq-mi (13-sq-km) plateau, it is isolated from the rest of the island by 2,000-ft (600-m) cliffs. Kalawao village, now abandoned, was the site of the original leper colony (see leprosy) established by King Kamehameha V in 1866; Father Damien ministered to the lepers there 1873–89. The entire peninsula was occupied by the state leprosarium until 1969, when Hawaii's isolation laws were abolished. How to thank TFD for its existence? Unfortunately you can't anchor off the island's greatest claim to fame, Kalaupapa Peninsula, site of the onetime leper colony -- a flat neck of land jutting out below the immense cliffs of the northern coast. For instance, the Kalaupapa peninsula is more than a "desolate" and "drab shelf of volcanic rock" (p. Rough seas and 2,000-foot cliffs still keep the Kalaupapa peninsula fairly isolated today, although the remote place has acquired some name recognition, thanks to the courageous young priest who volunteered to go minister to this "leper colony" more than 100 years ago. |
