Kaliaev, Ivan Platonovich 

Born June 24 (July 6), 1877, in Warsaw; died May 10 (23), 1905. Russian revolutionary, member of the Socialist Revolutionary Party.

Kaliaev was a student at the universities of Moscow and St. Petersburg from 1897 to 1899. He joined the St. Petersburg League of Struggle for the Liberation of the Working Class in 1898. Kaliaev became a member of the Socialist Revolutionary Party in 1903, joining its fighting organization in Geneva. In 1904 he took part in the attempted assassination of the minister of internal affairs, V. K. Plehve, in St. Petersburg. Kaliaev assassinated the governor-general of Moscow, Grand Duke Sergei Aleksandrovich, with a bomb in Moscow on Feb. 4, 1905. At his trial on Apr. 5, 1905, Kaliaev made a speech denouncing the tsarist government. He was executed at Shlissel’burg Fortress.
