Kalmar War of 1611–13

    0.01 sec.
Kalmar War of 1611–13

a war between Denmark and Sweden for domination of the Baltic Sea and for the southern part of the Scandinavian Peninsula and the northern coast of Norway (both of which belonged to Denmark). The war resulted in victory for Denmark. Danish troops, who began a siege of the Swedish city and fortress of Kalmar in the spring of 1611, captured it in August 1611, and in May 1612 they captured Alvs-borg, the most important Swedish fortress and only Swedish port at that time in the Kattegat Straits. In accordance with the terms of the peace treaty concluded on Jan. 20, 1613, in Knared, Denmark retained the rights to Alvsborg and its environs until Sweden completed payment of 1 million thalers over a six-year period. The treaty also confirmed the conditions of the Peace of Stettin of 1570, which was favorable to Denmark (this treaty had concluded the Seven Years’ War of the North of 1563–70).
