Kampala (kämpä`lä), city (2002 pop. 1,189,142), capital of Uganda, on Lake Victoria. It is Uganda's largest city and its administrative, communications, economic, and transportation center. Manufactures include processed foods, beverages, furniture, and machine parts. Agricultural exports include coffee, cotton, tea, and sugar. It is linked by railroad with Kasese, a mining center in SW Uganda, and with Mombasa, Kenya, on the Indian Ocean coast. Steamers on Lake Victoria link the city with ports in Kenya and Tanzania. An international airport is nearby, at Entebbe Entebbe , town (2002 pop. 55,086), S Uganda, on Lake Victoria, near Kampala. Located in a region producing cotton, coffee, and plantains, it is the site of a major international airport.

Despite its proximity (20 mi/32 km) to the equator, the city has a moderate climate, largely because of its altitude (c.4,000 ft/1,220 m). The city is built on and around six hills and has modern government and commercial quarters as well as wide avenues that fan out toward the surrounding suburbs. Much of the city was destroyed after the overthrow (1979) of Idi Amin Amin, Idi , c.1925–2003, Ugandan army officer and dictator. From the small Kakwa ethnic group, he advanced in the Ugandan armed forces from private (1946) to major general (1968). In 1971 he seized control of the government, toppling the regime of Milton Obote.

Kampala is the seat of the East African Development Bank and Makerere Univ.

Kampala

City (pop., 1998: 1,154,000), capital of Uganda. The country's largest city, it is in southern Uganda, north of Lake Victoria. It was selected in 1890 by Capt. Frederick Lugard as the headquarters of the British East Africa Company. Lugard's fort on Old Kampala Hill remained the Ugandan colonial administrative headquarters until 1905. In 1962 Kampala became the capital of independent Uganda. It is the site of the headquarters of most of Uganda's large firms and of Makerere University (1922) and the Uganda Museum.

the capital of Uganda. Located in central Africa, near the northern shore of Lake Victoria, at an elevation of up to 1, 300 m. The city has an equatorial climate characterized by monsoons. The average January temperature is about 22°C; the average July temperature is 20°C. Total annual precipitation is more than 1, 500 mm (at Entebbe). Area, 22 sq km; population, 80, 000 (1970; including suburbs, 332, 000). The city is administered by the government of Uganda. There is also an elected city council.

A railroad connects Kampala with the port of Mombasa, Kenya, on the Indian Ocean. A branch railroad line connects Kampala with Port Bell on Lake Victoria. Kampala is a highway junction, and there is an airport in Entebbe, 35 km to the south. Kampala is the main economic center of the country, with textile, flour, butter, and brewery enterprises. Other important economic activities include the processing of coffee, cotton, tea, hides, and leather and the production of cigarettes and cement.

Educational institutions in Kampala include Makerere University (since 1970, the National University of Uganda), a medical school, a teachers’ college, the Scientific Society of Uganda, the Regional Institute of East Africa (social research), and scientific research institutions in agriculture, medicine, and chemistry. The university library contains more than 125, 000 volumes. Cultural facilities include the Museum of Uganda (with a uniquecollection of African musical instruments and the Center for Archaeological Research), the National Theater (its building was constructed in 1959), the Limited Theater traveling troupe(organized in 1968), and the Heartbeat of Africa song and danceensemble (created in 1964).
