It is a rail terminus and has industries that produce foodstuffs, tobacco, machinery, machine tools, and automobile parts. Kamyanets-Podilskyy was part of the duchy of Halych-Volhynia from the 12th to the 14th cent., when it passed to Poland. It came under Russian control in 1793.
