In west-central WV, east of Huntington; organized Nov 14, 1788 from Greenbrier County (WV) and Montgomery County (in VA). Name Origin: For the Kanawha River, which traverses it; named for an Indian tribe, possibly the Conoy of Algonquian linguistic stock. The name has been said to mean 'hurricane.'

Area (sq mi): 910.99 (land 903.10; water 7.89). Pop per sq mi: 214.30.
Pop 2005: 193,559. State rank: 1. Pop change: 2000-20005 -3.30%; 1990-2000 -3.60%. Pop 2000: 200,073 (White 90.10%; Black or African American 7.00%; Hispanic or Latino 0.60%; Asian 0.80%; Other 1.70%). Foreign born: 1.40%. Median age: 40.20.
Income 2000: per capita $20,354; median household $33,766; Pop below poverty level: 14.40%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $28,775-$32,789.
Unemployment 2004: 4.80%. Change from 2000: 0.80%. Median travel time to work: 21.90 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 8.70%.

    The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection and the state's Rehabilitation Environmental Action Plan (REAP) program are teaming up with Kanawha County Planning Commission to address the problem with scrap tires in the state.
    A study by Paul Nyden of my hometown paper, the Charleston Gazette, confirms the last finding, and adds another interesting fact: Voters in more affluent Kanawha County neighborhoods tended to vote in higher numbers and cast the majority of their votes for President Bush.
