In northeastern IL, west of Chicago; organized Jan 16, 1836 from La Salle County. Name Origin: For Elisha Kent Kane (1796-1835), IL legislator, jurist, and U.S. senator (1825-35).

Pop 2005: 482,113. State rank: 5. Pop change: 2000-20005 19.30%; 1990-2000 27.30%. Pop 2000: 404,119 (White 67.70%; Black or African American 5.80%; Hispanic or Latino 23.70%; Asian 1.80%; Other 13.10%). Foreign born: 15.70%. Median age: 32.20.

    On the central southern border of UT; organized Jan 16, 1864 (prior to statehood) from Washington County. Name Origin: For Gen. Thomas Leiper Kane (1822-83), Union army officer and friend to the Mormons who acted as an intermediary in the so-called Mormon War of 1858.
