Kanellopoulos, Panayotis

Kanellopoulos, Panayotis (pänäyô`tēs känālō`plōs), 1902–86, Greek writer and political leader. A professor of sociology at the Univ. of Athens, he was active in World War II in the resistance and in the government-in-exile, in which he served as deputy premier and war minister. An outspoken opponent of authoritarianism, after the 1967 military coup he was subjected to arrest and house detention under the junta. Kanellopoulos is the author of essays, poems, and dramas in the fields of sociology and cultural philosophy. His work includes Ascent to Faith (1966), Mistra: The Byzantine Pompeii (1963), and Five Men—Five Centuries (1971).
