Nagykanizsa

Nagykanizsa (nŏ`dyəkŏnĭ'zhŏ), city (1990 pop. 54,059), SW Hungary. An agricultural market center, its economy relies on grain, livestock, and foodstuff trading. There are oil fields nearby. Founded c.1300 as a fortress, Nagykanizsa was captured by the Turks in 1600. It has a museum, an 18th-century Franciscan church, and the ruins of the old fortress. The city is sometimes called Kanizsa.
Nagykanizsa 

a city in southwestern Hungary in Zala megyék. Population, 39,400 (1970). Railroad junction. A brewery, a distillery, flour mills, a dairy, a glass factory, and a natural gas processing plant are located in the city. Equipment for petroleum and natural gas production is manufactured and repaired.
