On the northeastern border of IL, south of Chicago; organized Feb 11, 1853 from Iroquois and Will counties. Name Origin: For the Kankakee Indian tribe, possibly from Mohegan 'wolf' or 'wolfplace' but meaning is unclear.

Area (sq mi): 681.44 (land 676.75; water 4.70). Pop per sq mi: 159.50.
Pop 2005: 107,972. State rank: 18. Pop change: 2000-20005 4.00%; 1990-2000 7.90%. Pop 2000: 103,833 (White 77.80%; Black or African American 15.50%; Hispanic or Latino 4.80%; Asian 0.70%; Other 4.00%). Foreign born: 3.50%. Median age: 35.20.
Income 2000: per capita $19,055; median household $41,532; Pop below poverty level: 11.40%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $24,744-$25,497.
Unemployment 2004: 7.60%. Change from 2000: 1.80%. Median travel time to work: 23.60 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 21.80%.
