Kaolack

Kaolack (kou`läk), city (1988 pop. 150,961), W Senegal, a port on the Saloum River. Lying in a farm area, Kaolack is a major peanut marketing and exporting center and has a large peanut oil factory. Brewing, leather tanning, cotton ginning, and fish processing are also important industries. Salt is produced from nearby salines. The city is on the railroad from Dakar to the Niger River in Mali. Kaolack is the center of the Sufi Muslim Tijaniyya brotherhood, whose mosque is on the city's outskirts.

Kaolack 

a city in western Senegal. Population, 96, 300 (1970). Kaolack is a port on the Saloum River (peanut export), a railway station on the Dakar-Bamako line, and a highway junction. Peanut oil is manufactured in the city.

The report says that of the 52 deep water borehole and supply systems built by the charity Caritas in Senegal's Kaolack region since the 1980s, only 33 are still functioning.
A new microwave link will be installed between The Gambia's capital, Banjul, and Kaolack in Senegal with fibre-optic connectivity to Dakar.
