Kapel’meister
originally in the 16th-18th centuries, the leader of a choral or instrumental choir; in the 19th century, a theatrical, choral, or symphonic conductor. Now the director of a symphony orchestra is called direzher (conductor); of a military band, voennyi direzher (military conductor); and of a choir, khorovoi direzher (choral conductor) or khormeister.
