Kapilavastu (kä'pĭləvä`st), ancient town, S Nepal. According to legend, the Buddha, whose father ruled the state of Kapilavastu, was born nearby and passed his early years there.

The human development status of the population in that district ranks between that of Rupandehi and Kapilvastu, two other districts of this part of the Tarai region.
As Buddhists we have read much about Kapilvastu being the home town of the Prince Siddhartha who later became the Buddha.
Meanwhile, archaeological sites of Buddhist significance in the adjoining Kapilvastu District and other nearby localities are in a state of neglect.
