Zelentsov, Kapiton Alekseevich
Born in March 1790; died May 3 (15), 1845. Russian painter and graphic artist. During the second half of the 1820’s, Zelentsov studied under A. G. Venetsianov. In 1833 he became a member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. During the Patriotic War of 1812, he created caricatures of the French. Zelentsov’s work is distinguished by the poetic images and truthful representation of everyday details typical of the Venetsianov school. These characteristics are expressed in his depictions of folk scenes and his interior paintings, as well as in his illustrations of works by A. S. Pushkin, V. A. Zhukovskii, and M. N. Zagoskin in the collection One Hundred Russian Writers (1839–41). Forty etchings in the publication The Magic Lantern (1817) are attributed to Zelentsov. REFERENCEAlekseeva, T. V.
