Kara-Kul (kä'rə-k
l), mountain lake, c.140 sq mi (360 sq km), Badakhshan, E Tajikistan, in the Pamir, near the Chinese border. It is c.12,840 ft (3,900 m) above sea level, and its greatest depth is 780 ft (240 m).Kara-Kul’ an urban-type settlement in Osh Oblast, Kirghiz SSR. Situated near the confluence of the Naryn and Karasu rivers on the Frunze-Osh highway, 78 km from the Tash-Kumyr railroad station, the terminus of a branch line from Uchkurgan. Population, 14, 600 (1972). Kara-Kul’ arose in 1962 with the construction of the Toktogul Hydroelectric Power Station.
