Kara-Murza, Georgii Sergeevich 

Born May 10 (23), 1906, in Moscow; died Aug. 22, 1945. Soviet historian and sinologue. Became a member of the CPSU in 1939.

Kara-Murza became a teacher in 1932. He was a professor at the Moscow Institute of Oriental Studies from 1935 to 1938; from 1939 to 1941 he was a professor at Moscow State University and a senior researcher at the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Kara-Murza fought in the Great Patriotic War and was killed at the front. His major works dealt with the history of China and included the The Taip’ings (1941; 3rd ed., 1957), “On the Problem of the Class Nature of Sun Yat-senism” (Problemy Kitaia, 1931, nos. 6–7), and chapters on the history of China in the college textbook Modern History of the Colonial and Dependent Countries (vol. 1, 1940).
