Karadag
(Turkic, “black mountain”), a mountain massif in the Crimea, on the Black Sea coast. It rises to an altitude of 577 m. The Karadag is the remains of a volcanic cluster of the Lower Jurassic period and is composed of lava and tuff (ranging from basalt to liparite). It consists of a number of ranges and peaks with original forms of weathering. The settlement of Planerskoe (formerly Koktebel’) is situated at the foot of the mountains on the east, and the Krymskoe Primor’e health resort is on the west. The Karadag Division of the Institute of the Biology of the Southern Seas of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR is also located there. Nearby are the vineyards of the Koktebel’ sovkhoz. The area is important for tourism. Want to thank TFD for its existence? Tell a friend about us, add a link to this page, add the site to iGoogle, or visit the webmaster's page for free fun content. |
