Karakul Breeding, Institute of 

(full name, All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Karakul Breeding), organized in 1935 in Samarkand on the basis of the Katta-Kurgan Experimental Karakul Breeding Center. In 1971 the institute had departments of breeding and genetics; selection and pure-breeding; Astrakhan lamb breeding, merchandising, and the technology of karakul raw materials; pasturing; technology of feeding and keeping; feed production; accounting and organization of agricultural production; and scientific and technical information. It has laboratories of the biology of reproduction, biochemical genetics, morphogenetics and histochemistry, and selection and seed production of pasture plants and experimental workshops. There are branches in Bukhara and Kashkadar’ia Oblast, a base at Turt-Kul, and an experimental farm, the Karnab State Pedigreed Karakul Sheep Plant, in Narpai Raion, Samarkand Oblast. The institute has regular and correspondence graduate work. It has published Trudy (Proceedings) since 1940.
