Karamian, Artashes Ivanovich 

Born Mar 2 (15), 1908, in Kafan, in present-day Armenian SSR. Soviet neurophysiologist; corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1970) and the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR (1963). Member of the CPSU since 1940.

Karamian graduated from the Yerevan Medical Institute in 1935, a student of L. A. Orbeli. He worked in the Institute of Physiology of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR from 1945 to 1950 and in the Institute of Experimental Medicine of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR from 1950 to 1959. He has been with the I. M. Sechenov Institute of Evolutionary Physiology and Biochemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR since 1959. His main works deal with the evolution of cerebellar and cerebral functions in the phylogenetic vertebrate series (cyclostomes, fishes, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals) and with the comparative pathology of the central nervous system and the tropic-adaptive role of the autonomic nervous system in regulating the functions of the higher divisions of the brain. Karamian has been awarded the I. P. Pavlov Prize of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1957), the Order of the Patriotic War Second Class, and various medals.
