Karas, Vjekoslav

Born May 19, 1821, in Karlovac; died there July 5, 1858. Croatian painter, founder of secular realist art in Croatia.

Karas began his artistic studies in Karlovac. He subsequently entered the Florentine Academy of Arts. From 1841 to 1847 he studied under J. F. Overbeck in Rome. His paintings executed in Italy were devoted to mythological subjects; his drawings dealt with folk types. Karas returned to Karlovac in 1848, where he was a successful portraitist. His paintings, which reflect the influence of the Biedermeier style, are distinguished by keen observation, thorough modeling of forms, and subtle contemplative imagery. Among his works are Roman Girl With a Lute (1845–47) and the portraits of A. Krešić and M. Krešić (1852–56)—all are in the Gallery of Modern Arts of the Yugoslav Academy in Zagreb.
