Karatsiupa, Nikita Fedorovich 

Born Apr. 12 (25), 1911, in the village of Alekseevka, in present-day Kuibyshev Raion, Dnepropetrovsk Oblast. Colonel; Hero of the Soviet Union (Jun. 21, 1965). Became a member of the CPSU in 1939.

The son of a peasant, Karatsiupa entered the frontier service in 1932. In 1933 he completed the school for junior staff officers handling service dogs; and in 1937 he graduated from the Central School for Staff Officers Handling Service Dogs in the Border Guard. Between 1933 and 1937, he was a trainer and instructor with service dogs at frontier posts. After 1939 he held various posts in the headquarters of border detachments and frontier military districts. From 1957 to 1961 he served in the headquarters of the border guard of the USSR. In 1961 he entered the reserves.

A skillful tracker, Karatsiupa participated in 120 military encounters with smugglers and diversionary forces; he apprehended 467 persons violating the state frontiers. Karatsiupa has been awarded the Order of Lenin, two Orders of the Red Banner, the Order of the Red Star, and a number of medals.
