Kareli 

an urban-type settlement and administrative center of Kareli Raion, Georgian SSR. It is situated on the right bank of the Kura River. Railroad station, 94 km southwest of Tbilisi. Population, 7,000 (1970). It is the site of a winery. There is also an electrical engineering technicum.

Within hours, Russian troops also deployed into South Ossetia as part of a "peace enforcement" operation pushing the Georgian army out of South Ossetia and marching into Georgia proper by occupying Gori (Stalin's birthplace), Kareli, and other cities.
Georgian officials said Russian aircraft had entered Georgian airspace twice and bombed the cities of Gori and Kareli, while Georgia's Rustavi-2 television reported a Russian plane had been shot down in South Ossetia.
