Karelian Folding
the tectonic processes (fold region, mountain formation, granite formation, and regional metamor-phism) that concluded the accumulation of the geosynclinal bedsof the Lower and Middle Proterozoic of the eastern part of theBaltic Shield. The Karelian folding is divided into two epochs(phases), the early Karelian (c. 2 billion to 1.9 billion years ago)and the late Karelian (c. 1.75–1.65 billion years ago). An ana-logue of the Karelian folding was the Svecofennian folding in western Finland. In the early Karelian epoch a partial stabiliza-tion of the largest part of the Baltic Shield took place; it becamecompletely stabilized in the late Karelian. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
