Karinskii, Nikolai Mikhailovich
Born Mar. 22 (Apr. 3), 1873, in Viatka, the present-day city of Kirov; died Dec. 14, 1935, in Moscow. Soviet Slavicist and dialectologist; corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1921). Son of the philosopher M. I. Karinskii. Karinskii graduated from the University of St. Petersburg in 1896 and became a professor there in 1903. Beginning in 1911 he taught as a professor at the Women’s Pedagogical Institute, the Institute of History and Philology (1913–17), the Viatka Pedagogical Institute (1919–23), the Second Moscow State University (1924–30), and the V. I. Lenin Moscow State Pedagogical Institute (1930–35). In 1931 he became head of the Dialectographical Commission of the Institute of Language and Thought of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Karinskii’s scientific works deal with the history of Russian and Old Bulgarian, Russian dialectology, Slavic paleography, and related disciplines. WORKSIazyk Pskova i ego oblasti v XV v.
