Karl Goebel

Goebel, Karl 

Born Mar. 8, 1855, in Billigheim; died Oct. 9, 1932, in Munich. German botanist.

Goebel was a professor at the university in Munich (from 1891), where he organized a botanical garden; corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1924); and president of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences (1930). He was an advocate of the organographic school of plant morphology, which examined plant structures in connection with their physiological functions and rarely concerned itself with problems of phylogeny. Of great importance were Goebel’s works on the comparative embryology of higher plants and on botanical geography. (He made many journeys to the countries of Asia, America, and Australia.)
