Karl Maksimovich

Maksimovich, Karl Ivanovich 

Born Nov. 11 (23), 1827, in Tula; died Feb. 4 (16), 1891, in St. Petersburg. Russian botanist. Academician of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1868).

In 1850, Maksimovich graduated from the University of Dorpat (now Tartu). He was a student of A. A. Bunge. In 1852 he began working at the St. Petersburg Botanical Gardens. He became the director of the Botanical Museum of the Academy of Sciences in 1870. Maksimovich traveled around the world from 1853 to 1857 and journeyed to the Far East and Japan from 1859 to 1864. He laid the basis for the study of the flora of the Far East and worked on the botanical collections of N. M. Przheval’skii, G. N. Potanin, and N. V. Pevtsov. His principal works were on the taxonomy of flowering plants (maple, wood betony).
