Karny, Alfons
Born Nov. 10, 1901, in Bialystok. Polish sculptor-portraitist. Karny studied under T. Breyer at the School of Fine Arts in Warsaw (1925–30). In his busts he accurately renders the distinctive physical appearance and personality of his models. His works are also characterized by a feeling of plastic expressiveness and by the use of the decorative qualities of his materials (granite, bronze, or clay). His works include portraits of M. Kotarbin-ski (1933), E. Godlewski (1935), L. Solski (1944), and E. Hemingway (1963)—in the National Museum (Warsaw) and other collections.
