Karoly Zipernowsky

Zipernowsky, Károly 

Born Apr. 4, 1853, in Vienna; died Nov. 29, 1942, in Budapest. Hungarian inventor in the field of electrical engineering. Corresponding member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (1893). Chairman of the Union of Hungarian Electrical Engineers (1905).

Zipernowsky graduated from the Hungarian Palatine Joseph Technical University in Budapest in 1878 and became a professor at the university in 1893. In 1878 he was appointed director of the electrical-engineering department of the Ganz machine-building firm. Together with M. Déri, Zipernowsky developed a distribution system for single-phase AC current in which the primary windings of transformers are connected in parallel.
