Trokhimenko, Karp Dem’ianovich
Born Oct. 13 (25), 1885, in the village of Sushchany, Kiev Oblast. Soviet artist. People’s Artist of the Ukrainian SSR (1944). Trokhimenko studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts from 1910 to 1916. Beginning in 1933 he taught at the Kiev Art Institute. In his many thematic pictures he realistically depicts the socialist construction of the Ukraine, for example, The Personnel of Dneprostroi (1937, Museum of Ukrainian Fine Arts of the Ukrainian SSR, Kiev), The Female Kolkhoznik Activists (1940, Vinnitsa Museum of Local Lore), and Building the Kiev Hydroelectric Power Plant (1963). Trokhimenko also depicts the friendship between the Ukrainian and Russian peoples and has done scenes from the life of T. G. Shevchenko, for example, Shevchenko and Engel’gardt (1939, Kiev Museum of T. G. Shevchenko). Trokhimenko was awarded the T. G. Shevchenko State Prize of the Ukrainian SSR in 1969 for his cycle of pictures My Dear Homeland (1964–68). He has been awarded two orders, as well as medals. REFERENCEVrona, I. K. D. Trokhymenko.
