Karpov, Anatolii Evgen’evich 

Born May 23, 1951, in Zlatoust. Soviet chess player. International grand master (1970); Honored Master of Sport (1974).

Karpov graduated from the economics department of the University of Leningrad in 1978. He has been world chess champion since 1975. In 1978 he won the match for that title against V. L. Korchnoi in Baguio, the Philippines. He was the USSR champion for 1976–77 and the world youth champion in 1969.

Karpov has won several international tournaments, including the A. A. Alekhine Memorial Tournament in Moscow (1971) and contests in Hastings (1971–72), San Antonio, Texas (1972), Madrid (1973), Portorož-Ljubljana (1975), Milan (1975), Skopje (1976), Montilla, Spain (1976), Bad Lauterberg, Federal Republic of Germany (1977), Las Palmas, Spain (1977), Tilburg, The Netherlands (1977), and Bugojno, Yugoslavia (1978). Karpov was on the USSR chess team that won the chess Olympiads in 1972, 1974, and 1980 and the European championships in 1973 and 1977. He was also on the Soviet student team at the world student championships in 1971 and 1972.

Karpov has been a member of the Central Committee of the Komsomol since 1974. He was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor in 1978.
