Karryev, Aga Karryevich 

Born Apr. 4 (17), 1908, in the aul (village) of Kipchak, in present-day Ashkhabad Raion, Turkmen SSR. Soviet historian. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Turkmen SSR (1951). Member of the CPSU since 1932. The son of a teacher.

Karryev graduated from the Ashkhabad Pedagogical Institute in 1939. From 1956 to 1959 he served as the director of the Institute of History, Archaeology, and Ethnography of the Academy of Sciences of the Turkmen SSR. Karryev has been head of the subdepartment of the history of the USSR at the M. Gorky Turkmen University since 1960. He has served as the director of the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the Turkmen SSR since 1968. Karryev has written basic works on the history of 18th- and 19th-century Turkmenia, including The Historical Roots of the Friendship Between the Russian and Turkmen Peoples (1950), The Annexation of Turkmenistan to Russia and the Progressive Significance of the Annexation (1956), and Leninist Friendship Between Peoples (1969, with Iu. E. Permiak). He is also one of the authors of The History of Soviet Turkmenistan (parts 1–2, 1970). Karryev has been awarded two orders as well as various medals.
