Kartsevskii, Sergei Osipovich 

Born Aug. 28, 1884, in Tobol’sk; died Nov. 7, 1955, in Geneva. Russian linguist.

Kartsevskii spent a great part of his life in Switzerland and was one of the founders of the Geneva school of linguistics. He graduated from the University of Geneva, where he had been a student of F. de Saussure. Beginning in 1920 he taught at the University of Strasbourg and later at the universities of Prague and Geneva. His principal works deal with linguistic theory and include a descriptive grammar of Russian (A Refresher Course in Russian, 1928).
