Kashkarov, Daniil Nikolaevich 

Born Mar 30 (Apr. 11), 1878, in Riazan’; died Nov. 26, 1941, at Khvoinaia Station, Novgorod Oblast. Soviet zoologist and ecologist; doctor of biological sciences (1934). Member of the CPSU (1941).

Kashkarov graduated from the natural sciences division and medical department of Moscow University in 1903 and 1908, respectively, a student of M. A. Menzbir. From 1919 to 1933 he was head of the subdepartment of vertebrate zoology at the Middle Asian University in Tashkent and, from 1934 to 1941, at Leningrad State University. Kashkarov did research on the terrestrial vertebrates of Middle Asia and promoted an ecological approach to the study of animals (including domestic breeds). He was the author of the first compendiums in the USSR of animal ecology.
