Kashmiri (kăshmē`rē), language belonging to the Dardic group of the Indo-Iranian subfamily of the Indo-European family of languages. But following a strange military confrontation at the moment of Partition in 1947, this image was crowded out by nasty struggles over the proper place of this small kingdom in either Pakistan or India, providing a convenient reason to boost military budgets, gather intelligence and conduct covert destabilization, while hundreds of thousands of Kashmiris moved out elsewhere, becoming refugees forced to carry their struggles to the back streets of distant cities. India did agree to Musharraf's proposal to allow Kashmiris to cross the LoC to meet their relatives, but before traffic can begin paperwork must be completed and land mines removed from the area. It is having a real impact on the lives of average Kashmiris allowing resumed contacts between long-separated populations. |
