Kassin, Nikolai Grigor’evich 

Born Dec 1 (13), 1885, in the village of Gnusino, Viatka Province, now Kirov Oblast; died Oct. 28, 1949, in Alma-Ata. Soviet geologist. Honored scientist of the Kazakh SSR (1943); member of the Kazakh Academy of Sciences (1946).

Kassin enrolled in the St. Petersburg Institute of Mines in 1904. He was arrested for his involvement in revolutionary activities in 1907 and was exiled from St. Petersburg in 1908. He graduated from the institute only in 1913. Early in his career he was involved with hydrogeological research in northeast Kazakhstan and in Gur’ev Oblast (1912–16) and with a geological study of Kirov Oblast (1918–24). His monograph on the geology of the Viatka (107th) sheet of the geological map of the European USSR was awarded the Przheval’skii Gold Medal in 1930. Kas-sin’s principal works were devoted to the study of the geological structure of Kazakhstan and the tapping of its diverse raw material resources and to the development of geological science in the Kazakh SSR. The 20th volume of Geology of the USSR, devoted to eastern Kazakhstan, and Materials on the Paleogeog-raphy of the Kazakh SSR were prepared under his direction. For these works he received the State Prize of the USSR (1946). Kassin was awarded two Orders of Lenin, the Order of the Patriotic War First Class, and a medal.
