Katmai
Mount. a volcano in SW Alaska, in the Aleutian Range: erupted in 1912 forming the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, a region with numerous fumaroles; established as Katmai National Monument, 10 917 sq. km (4215 sq. miles), in 1918. Height: 2100 m (7000 ft.). Depth of crater: 1130 m (3700 ft.). Width of crater: about 4 km (2.5 miles)

Katmai 

an active volcano in Alaska, in the northern Aleutian Range; elevation, 2, 047 m.

One of Katmai’s most violent eruptions occurred on June 6, 1912, and a caldera with a lake with a diameter of 1.5 km and a depth of approximately 1, 200 m was formed at the site of thecrater. The lower slopes of Katmai are covered with coniferousforests. The upper slopes are covered with mountain tundra.There are glaciers on the northeast slope.

Palos Conti's rider Felix de Giles completed a double aboard the Nicky Henderson-trained Katmai in the bumper.
This is also true for the huge Katmai National Park in the south of Alaska, where the landscape is marked by glaciers and volcanoes, a part of which are still active.
Henry Blake III, a Worcester native, ordered the 10 other crew members to abandon ship just before the Katmai sank early last Wednesday morning about 1,300 miles southwest of Anchorage.
