Born June 26 (July 8), 1890, in Kharkov. Soviet painter and graphic artist. People’s Artist of the RSFSR (1969). Corresponding member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1947). Became a member of the CPSU in 1949. From 1909 to 1916, Katsman studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture under K. A. Korovin and S. V. Maliutin. He was one of the founders of the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia (AKhRR). Katsman is primarily a portraitist. Through the thorough modeling of forms, he accurately renders the external appearance of his subject. He has created portraits of K. E. Voroshilov (pastel, 1933, Central Museum of the Armed Forces of the USSR, Moscow), B. A. Lavrenev (pastel, red chalk, and pencil; 1947, Tret’iakov Gallery), and Nina Zolotova (pastel, 1958–60, Tret’iakov Gallery). Katsman has also executed a number of genre compositions, for example, The Lacemakers of Kaliazin (1928) and A Story About a Real Man (1949). Both works, which are in the Tret’iakov Gallery, were executed in pastel, red chalk, and pencil. REFERENCE[Gransberg, A.] E. A. Katsman. Moscow-Leningrad, 1950.Want to thank TFD for its existence?
